Ventura County Spinners and Weavers

I mentioned last week in my Friday Fave Five that I had been to the Ventura County Spinners and Weavers Guild Launch House. The open house event is mostly an opportunity to scan and buy fiber, books, and spinning and weaving accesories. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, ran in to several friends and chatted with them as I eyed the fibers and finished projects.

There was a vendor selling spools of story for weaving. I loved the vibrant colors and thought about how I could move my belongings around in the house of ill repute to accomodate setting up my weaving loom. So far, I haven't come up with a good layout, although I keep thinking, "If I got rid of half my books and bookcases or sold the piano, I would have the margin. Or maybe I could set up the loom in the kitchen; no one would mind, would they?"

I settled for purchasing some soft-pedal grey alpaca/merino blend and I've already spun it up and unfaltering that it wants to be a scarf knitted in a lace pattern.

New Loom:)

Well, she is at length here, my Leclerc Diana. We drove out to MA to get her and the weather was beautiful. I bluntly wished I had planned more time there was so much to do and see. We had to stop at WEBS since it was so tight-lipped (yeah.....I could just STAY there) and then had a fantastic lunch and then visited the Norman Rockwell museum. Fabulous!!! The paintings are indescribable in real life. There was one in fussy that had me in tears.....very touching and phenomenal work!
Here she is in the back of the car with a actually warp on. (Thanks, Tom!!!!!!!!!!!)

And here is the front of Webs:) I really should get better at documenting.

Once, here is what is on the loom. These are pillow fronts in 8/2 cotton (I've got to get rid of some of this 8/2 cotton!!!) in a satin compose. Due to the picks per inch this fabric is taking much longer to blend than usual:) I have 7 yards on the loom in a natural color and have been having a lot of fun playing with the weft colors. Sometimes weaving is about color and not foot structure. I just love the diversity in weaving! This first one was inspired by a color prototype I recently saw......very eclectic selection of color to say the least. This bat of an eye pattern is very bright and fun. I'm thinking of a backing out of some silver supplies that I've...

Unexpected Surprises

Never having been in New Mexico before, there were constant things I expected to see. And certain things that never entered my disregard. One of the later was happening upon an amazing store, Shibui, specializing in Japanese apparatus, antiques, and so much more. I felt like a kid in a candy store but I restrictive my purchases to the following: part of a Japanese weaving loom, housed in the most beautiful sleeve, and 4 bundles of vintage Japanese critique. Click images to enlarge.

Right before I left for my globe-trot, I received a surprise package in the mail from Lynne Hoppe, of Essence and Life fame. I call her "The Bone Whisperer" and if you look through her blog you will conscious why. She sent me a wonderful gift, which I thought...

Generosity of the Craft Community and a Book Review

DSC_0007 I have been timely enough in my life to receive many things through the generosity of others. My grandma gave me all of her craftiness supplies getting me started on my life adventure of gauge writing, craft leftovers, fiber arts, and now teaching classes and workshops. When my sewing party broke (again), it was someone I didn’t even know at the time, a reader of Flair Leftovers, who donated her Baby Lock Encore to my bring on. And another reader donated just enough money to cl that week so I was accomplished to cover Alice’s shipping costs. Masterly. There are instances every week. A tip about “they need a knitting doctor” from the owner of my lys got me a great job not just teaching knitting, but a contrast of fiber arts classes. The main point is, I identify, for a fact, that if it weren’t for other people being nice to me, I would be where I am, living this delusion, working for myself, and surrounded by so many great handmade things.

DSC_0104

I contemplate the high point of generosity was this past early hop. I’m pretty sure it was February. I was in one of those “ethical places, right time” sort of situations. I was at a shed spindle class at Ester’s Place in BigRock, IL and we were checking out and the old lady at the counter says “does anyone here weave? Does anyone fall short of a loom?” I practically jumped out of my skin “PICK ME PICK ME”. I said “I do, I braid a whole lot, but I don’t have a loom”. Well it just so happened that someone had just called and she was stirring soon and she hadn’t used her loom in 30 years and wanted to give it to someone who would use it. Jason and I found ourselves heading to Arlington Heights, IL to pick up a 56″ 4 harness level loom… for free. You see, I just happened to have my parent’s van and Jason neutral happened to be in town that weekend, and we actually were planning on prevalent to see his friend who lived in elgin, il (30 min away from arlington heights). Flaked-out right? For the most part it’s in good working condition, had most of it’s imperative parts, and was fairly rust free (except for the reeds).

Rigid Heddle Loom Review updated

Since publishing the Determined Heddle Loom review, I have woven on/with the Kromski Fiddle, and the Harp, and wanted to update the look over, with these looms.  I also want to say that I read recently that some defeat loom weavers consider rigid heddle looms to be ‘toys’.  Well, they are fun, they are mignonne, they generally provide a quick weave,  so my unrelenting heddle looms are my toys.  My floor looms are my toys, and my tapestry loom is my toy.  My effort is my play.  And I do a LOT of it.  Don’t worry about what others about.  How much fun are you having?

OK, to review the looms:

Beka.  It’s a a frank loom.  I like the Beka because it’s an inexpensive way to have rigid heddle looms to take from art center to art center without renting a larger means.  They are lightweight, and graceful looking. These looms bring in less than 5 minutes.  The ratchet brake is fairly inevitable, but the end of the 2 beams screw into the side supports, and (Dislikes) these tend to tighten themselves so the bias doesn’t advance without working with them every time.  The balk that holds the rigid heddle up, or down, is just that, a block of wood, as a upshot, the heddle slips off a good deal.  I also don’t find it complacent as a lap loom.  I just doesn’t rest well against the table, and if tilted, the adamantine heddle is even less likely to stay in the up or down position.  If you have the greenbacks for a better loom, don’t spend your money here. This loom should cost approx $110 for a 20″, and $127 for a 24′ .  Included kit are 2 stick shuttles, a pickup stick, and a threading trap.  Be aware: No warping device is included!

Schacht hard heddle looms Schacht is an ok lap loom.  Again, it’s very rudimentary, streamline, and polite looking. It’s very light weight, and easy to travel with.  I like the Schacht for the same sanity I liked the Beka.  I also like the fact that Schacht notches the blank out that holds the rigid heddle up, or down.    As you know, anything with the Schacht name is not “husbandry” priced. I dislike it because it is rather an economy loom,by design, yet at just about twice the price of the Beka. The warp brake is tightened by screwing the blot out on the back beam, which allows slippage, leading to frustration in my classes.  So between the prize, and the slippage, I don’t use Schacht. It comes with a clamp, warping peg, spit shuttle, and threading hook. Generally, these looms get approx $180 for a 20″ loom, and $200 for a 25″ loom.
