Thistles Layout Finished, Sewing Begins

I have finished fidgeting around with my layout and have begun by sewing together my first thistle (shown socialistic). Looks like the pieces “wave” a bit and it doesn’t lay non-glare - but let me assure you that it is perfectly flat, it’s just the dimension in the batik textile that gives the piece movement. Ah, the joys of batiks!

I am proffer piecing Jinny Beyer style. (If you don’t differentiate about Jinny Beyer’s methods, follow the association, she is the greatest!) I can almost hear you saying, “You are HAND PIECING? Why?”

Well, for one, the scanty four sided wonky shape will lay perfectly flat only if the intersections are gratis of stitching - meaning, I have to start and stop on the seamline, not fun with a sewing auto (mainly because I would have to think while I sew, not my favorite thing to do - ha!).

And secondly, this will establish f get on a great “take-along” project because I will be able to sew together four pieces at a era without too much thinking about which way is up and where does each piece go - I’ll just be making scarcely individual thistles. AND I’ll be able to prayfully on the knuckles each thistle together (each flower represents a person in my church and kinfolk life), giving more than just a passing thought to each herself.

I calculate that it will take about 20 hours to sew together approximately 80 groups of four. Another 10 to give the coup de gr piecing and 10 more hours just to look and think over and contemplate. It’s an adventure.

“Think of all the beauty still formerly larboard around you and be happy.” -Anne Frank

my first sewing project

I'm not false when I tell you that I just learned how to sew last night.
We were catching up on some Tivo'd episodes of Black hat Minds. And I get this brilliant idea that I want to make a pillow substitute for the chair in our living room. Out comes my year-old sewing instrument... that I have never used.
First my husband taught me how to set up the machine and how to train it. He followed that with a mini lesson in Sewing 101. Apparently he paid way more r in home-ec than I ever did :)
I came home from work psyched to put my new skills to use. And this is what I came up with. I very recently "winged" it. I used left over fabric from my pinboard and some wonderful-expensive stuff that I just had to have from Ballard Designs. Do not look too closely. Nothing about it is upright. I can't wait try out real patterns now!

Magnetic sewing guide posted by hestiah

I was wondering if anyone knows accurately what machines can and cannot be used with a magnetic sewing guide. I'm thinking a computerized device, it may not be a good idea, but what about ones that only have some electronic features, or ones with magnetized bobbin cases?

I'm looking for a new sewing clique for my mom, who really misses her 1970's singer, which had a really presumptuous sewing guide that attached with a screw, and she says she can't keep her seams candid without something like that.

Right now, I'm thinking one of the Kenmores, a 16231, 18221 or perchance even the 19110 (but this one is computerized, so is the sewing guide out for it?).

Any help is appreciated!

Sewing up a storm on the old Viking

I young lady to sew. I think it's because sewing is like cooking -- it's creative and you get to see the results a lot quicker than criticism a book. Also it involves color and texture and design and it's fun.

This year I'm sewing some Christmas and birthday presents. I au fait to sew on my own. My mother didn't sew. A friend at college taught me a few tricks. But most everything I've well-educated by trial and error. More error than anything else.

I started sewing before my daughter was born. One of my first projects was a parenthood blouse. I remember it well. Orange and white elephants. I have no philosophy what I was thinking. But I loved the feel of the material -- and very likely the color. After that I made all kinds of things for my daughter including curtains for her bedroom and comforters, hats and dresses as well as stuffed toys.

I'm a empirical sewer. I make things that I hope people can use. And I'm no pro. I'm still knowledge but I put a lot of heart into what I make -- not to mention hours. So I ambition my projects will be well received.

I am though starting to worry about my sewing machine. It payment over $500 dollars -- 35 years ago. I've only had it worked on once. It weighs a ton. And it doesn't do anything extravagant. It comes with some cams that you can plug in and make it do some decorative stitches -- which in its day was graceful impressive.

But have you seen the new sewing machines? I took a class a team a few years ago and dragged my old heavy machine down to the fabric warehouse. That's when I got my first look at the new sewing machines. Wow. Is there anything they don't do? I thought it would be cool just to have a serger. But these machines have their own knowledge.

I really could use a machine with a brain. But I'm not sure about forking over thousands of dollars for one. My sewing is good-looking basic. And the old Viking still does the basic stitches I insufficiency to sew one piece of material to another. So for the time being, I guess...
