The Quilting Statue of Liberty

I would like to go to a quilt show. Yes, I have been to Houston. But I would like to go to a quilt show where the quilts are made and in use accustomed to by human beings. I really do not want to ruffle any feathers here or give anyone the satire that I don't genuinely appreciate the talent, work, time, profit, etc. etc. etc. that goes into making a 'best of show' quilt; but I really am a lot more grounded than that. I have seen some of these most desirable of show quilts, and quite frankly; I have mixed emotions about the whole allot. On one hand, if there should be art, this is the kind of art that not only holds my attention, but is something that is beyond words in stunner. In other words, quilts are my favorite kind of art to appreciate. No interrogate. On the other hand, the hand that bleeds from hand quilting, hand piecing, and erection shelves to hold fabric; I have to say:

WHERE ARE THE QUILTS?

I want and want to see a traditional quilt win something. It has to have under 1 billion stitches per square inch. It has to have two, maybe three, colors to it. It cannot have any applique anywhere on it or it is disqualified for being "garish'. It has to be made by someone who actually has grandchildren ( grandchildren who have one of her quilts and drags it around where ever they go), it has to have a 'reduce block', it cannot be perfectly square, it has to have a mistake in it somewhere and that mistake has to be notated on the poop card, it has to have a wave at the bottom when hung, and most importantly, it actually has to tapestry when displayed on a bed. If it is stiff as cardboard from the quilting and sizing, it needs to be omitted from the show branch. this quilt needs to have pictures...

More Beginning Quilting Tips

* Squaring up your blocks after making them inevitably means that you will have to rip out seams and re-sew them. As one of my classmates said, "I upon I'd paid more attention while making these things, it would have made this part easier." No kidding. Inspect out for those quarter inch seams...they'll gettcha!

* Sew around the edge of your quilt top (clemency inch from the edge, running stitch -- nothing creation) once it's all pieced and before you make your quilt sandwich. I can't say I really hear tell this part but apparently it has something to do with preventing your quilt top from becoming not-square. (I have a feeling advanced quilters are reading this and laughing -- that's OK).

* Binding strips are sewn together on an projection because it prevents bunching at the seams when you roll your binding and sew to to your quilt. My surmise is a diagonal seam also distributes tension a little less ill to that seam, so your binding doesn't pop open inadvertently.

* When fetching a quilting class at a store ALWAYS ask what the total cost of the class is, and if it's OK to reintroduce your own fabric and what supplies will be supplied as part of the cost of the class. The bring in of my class has doubled due to unnecessary supply purchases, and my unfitness/reluctance to ask these questions and/or just assuming that it was all inclusive.

* Color choices and heart pattern picking: is this generational or learned? There are some wonky color/configuration choices in my class.

Quilting Politics

Deteriorate, 1915, made by Belle Engley of Kingston, Michigan. cottons, pieced, 78.5 x 67.5 inches. Hoard of Marcia and Ron Spark.
Did you know that quilts have played an high-level role in American politics?
It's only since 1919 that women in the US had the promising to vote but American women have been playing an active r in politics since long before that and largely through their quilting.

The 19th century brought a growing natives through immigration and and growing populations mean growing group problems. Women created organizations to improve tutoring, prisons, temperance in drinking, abolition of war and slavery, and women's rights. The filthy rich to run these causes were raised at fairs, festivals and bazaars where they sold their baked goods, needlework and, yes, quilts.
The Laical War brought more cause for fundraising and more quilts being made to finance the buying of gun boats and asylum supplies and still more quilts were made to send out to the soldiers themselves. Quilts were familiar by Abolitionists to express their antislavery viewpoints and the names of stock quilting patterns were changed to reflect their views: for example Job's Tears became Grind Chain and Jacob's Ladder became Underground Railway.
In the 20th century women continued to disclose their political and patriotic points of view through quilting. Magazines and newspapers called for quilts to send to "Our Boys Over There" and to put across to raise money for the war cause.
But I'm happy to see that with...

Quilt Car

Another present a retreat was the QUILT CAR. There is a PT Cruiser under there somewhere. This was made by Jinny Grobusky, you can reach her at grobusky@yahoo.com, if you are interested in renting it. Please put quilt car in the grounds line so she will not think you are spamming her. She was very gracious to give me permission to appointment her pictures on my blog. This is so cool.

Getting There

I finished sewing the strips this morning and am now sewing the strips together.
I have started reasoning about the borders. I want fairly narrow black borders. I was viewpoint of inserting a gold strip but then I tried a gold intertwine and that looked great. Too bad I haven't got enough of it to go all the way around. My question is, if I go with the gold weave would I add it after quilting or before? I may be able to find a gold fabric that would work as well but I don't have anything on hand that I tone would suit.

Invited Blogger -- What an Honour!

Today, I in point of fact guest-blogged for my friend, Brit. It is her 4-year "blogversary" and to broadcast, she invited a handful of fellow bloggers (and friends) roomer post this week. If you're interested, you can check it out at Brit's blog, Running Stitch. You can also use that same relationship to read all about Brit and her adventures at Casa Stitch -- she has two delightful little boys, and I can assure you that the pictures alone are worth the galivant over to her blog.

I've known Brit for (gasp!) 7 years now - perchance even a bit more. It pains me to admit to that, as it makes me realize just how old I am and lately how long ago grad school was. You see, Brit is the college buddy (and former roommate?) of Mad-Quilter Mel, who is my grad Lyceum buddy. Mad-Quilter Mel's undergrad and grad school worlds on the spur of the moment collided one day, and we all became friends. You see, Brit and Mad-Quilter Mel decided to enlighten our entire grad school group, affectionately known as the "Biochem Girls", how to quilt. My model came one evening in Mad-Quilter Mel's apartment -- sitting at the quilting pr with a needle and thread in one hand and a JD and Coke in the other, I learned how to quilt, race of. At some point, I realized that I could no longer pull my needle through the configuration. I crawled -- yes, crawled -- under the quilting table (absotively-posolutely, the JD and Coke had nothing to do with my crawling under a table) and found a HUGE (2 inch?!) band of thread on the backside of the quilt. Needless to say, that was the end of my quilting days with the cup that cheers in hand. Fortunately, both Brit and Mad-Quilter Mel were kind enough to keep engaging me to their quilting bees (and giving me only tea to drink) and even letting me sew on their quilts. Long run, I got the hang of it and was even given Mad-Quilter status, as well!

Many quilting and non-quilting adventures have transpired over the years. I request I had a photo of us at a quilting bee (I'm pretty sure Brit has a bunch). Preferably, though,...
