How to Buy Cotton Quilting Fabric: Part 2

Here is the back part of last week’s article on how to buy cotton quilting fabric.

Not wanting to get too technical here, I’ll not spoken for you all of the details, but suffice it to say that even with 100% cotton fabric, there is variety.

First there is the get a wiggle on.

Poplin, chino, chenille and velveteen can all be 100% cotton. These fabrics are typically heavier than traditional quilting fabric, and may have a particular texture in their finish – like the fleecy velveteen. They would be fine used in large pieces, but you wouldn’t destitution to try to make ½” strips from any of these fabrics.

Good Quilting Fabrics

Broadcloth or unambiguous-weave cotton – this medium weight fabric can be sewn far, without slipping and sliding, and allowing smooth (and not bulky) bed allowances.

Homespun – this fabric is woven with already-dyed threads. In general these fabrics are solids, plaids, stripes, or checks.

Prevarication quilting fabric is woven using a bulkier cotton thread, and can seem warm-hearted of fuzzy. (Nice quilting fabric for a baby or a cold winter continually.)

Chintz – this fabric has a high thread count and a glazed dispatch. Although it adds some interest to your quilt, the thread count presents some challenges to to quilting, it may pucker as you sew, and pins and needles may cause permanent holes – not too handsome in a finished quilt.

New Fabrics at Quilt Market

I by the skin of one's teeth got back from the International Quilt Market in Houston where we debuted 6 new and overwhelming fabric collections with Windham Fabrics.

Whew - after 7 straight weeks of expeditions, the happy quilters were a blessing to me. I think the quilt enterprise has the friendliest and most enthusiastic buyers of all the markets we participate in!

I got to go this year for the first every so often old-fashioned in 2 years. I am usually in China at the end of October, working on new products.

I bent antiques and I thought it would be fun to showcase each new collection with an antique easy chair that represented the essence of each group. While quilting fabric has to be backed before it can be used for upholstery, these chairs came out true!

This is the Flora Collection - it’s all antique engravings of mill life and there is even a garden plan thrown in for a geometric mix.

Fiona - the “leading” collection is a fun, fabulous group based on a 1930’s French watercolor floral archetype. It’s part contemporary, part old world and a whole lot of pizazz.

Millicent - the lady-love of the bunch, is made up of Lilacs and roses, lace, and small old quilting patterns in a pink/gold group, a lilac and glum group and a grey/black group.

Another Sit and Sew Monday continued

The gals arrived this morning deft to sew. We set-up our machines and spread out our supplies and started making........eliminate keepers!

Block keepers are a great way to store "bar of the month" projects, applique blocks in progress and even vexed-stitch awaiting finishing/framing.

I thought I would portion with you not only our sit and sew day but how to make a block keeper.

This is what you need to get started:

a mailing tube (about 25" hunger and approx. 2" in diameter) available at office come up with stores
1 yard of cotton fabric (for main part of block guard)
1/4 yard of contrasting fabric for binding
a scrap piece of fabric for embellishing (spontaneous)
36" x 42" piece of cotton batting (Dolly acclimated to the new bamboo batting and loved it!)
1 yard of grosgrain ribbon
1 button (uncoerced)
cotton thread
sewing machine

The first step in making the exclude keeper is to cut the fabric 1" wider than your tube (so about 26" desire for the one shown)....leave the length at 36" elongated. Cut the batting the same size.

Place the batting on the wrong side of the fabric and congregate the fabric and batting. Press on the fabric side with a hot iron set on cotton. Don't press quickly on the batting, you may damage the batting.

Pressing will help the batting and fabric pin together slightly and make it ready for quilting. If you feel that the batting and fabric are not stout enough for quilting then use your favorite method for quilt basting.

International Quilt Market: New Fabric Launches

I unbiased returned from a very busy trade show, the International Quilt Peddle in Houston! Wow, what an energetic week we had. Again we displayed the new fabrics and again I am so overwhelmed with the genre words and super fabric orders we received from all over the world. The UK and Australia, France and Germany, Canada and of way home, USA. We were also excited about the tremendous enthusiasm within the fabric, sewing and quilting perseverance. What hiccup in the economy? We didn't see any evidence of a slow down in fabric sales which means textiles and sewing are the diggings to be. And an enormous increase in young and new sewers.... interested in fun and colorful, new and around design and projects for children, the house and clothing! So loads of pronounced news for the industry!
For me personally, I am thrilled to be a part of the Westminster Fibers side... my booth was directly across from my friend and the queen of plan, Amy Butler. We shared giggles and smiles the entire show! More on Amy, Anna-Maria Horner, Jane Sassaman, Kaffe Fassett and fabled Brandon Mabley in a future post!
Anyhow, enjoy a few pics to file your taste buds and stay tuned for much more on new fabrics, patterns...

How to Buy Cotton Quilting Fabric – Part I

I look at a few unconventional things when I consider fabrics to buy.

Generally I prefer unaffected fibers. It’s probably a sense of connecting to quilters of yesteryear. Or it may be that a expansion made to me years ago about “wrapping a baby in plastic (polyester)” only stuck with me – in a negative sense.

While I prefer basic fibers, I have made some fun quilts that include lame, and an occasional polyester or poly/cotton grade, because it offered some design benefit that I couldn’t find in cotton – like a sports logo.

This is one of a series of articles about contrastive types of fabric quilters use in their quilts. For simplicity, I will focus on the artless fibers cotton, wool and silk. I have used them all (although not in the same quilt). So you will get my firsthand occurrence and observations. Personal opinion as it is.

Since you can go online and find plenty of articles and websites that describe the fascinating way fabric is made and dyed, I’ll let them do the describing about that, and I will concentrate just on what quilters want to know – how will it be working with that breed of fabric?

Since 100% cotton fabric is clearly the most popular quilting fabric, let’s start there.

There are several limited reasons quilters prefer 100% cotton:

• Cotton is relaxed to work with. After you sew a seam, you can easily finger press your commissure allowances in the direction you want them to go. (That means that your fabric will stay put without urgent it every step along the way.)

• Cotton sticks together while you sew your pieces. Polyester tends to note and slide, requiring pinning or basting, lest your patches end up being sewn all cockeyed.

• Cotton has a scrap “give” to it that synthetics don’t have. This allows you to pull and tug a bit (as well as batch it up a little) in order to get the seams to match and make your corners substantial.

• Cotton breathes. Whether you are making a baby quilt or a bed quilt, 100% cotton fabric will take into account air to circulate while capturing the warmth. How this works is just a conundrum to me, but it seems to be true.
