How to Buy Cotton Quilting Fabric: Part 2

Here is the patronize part of last week’s article on how to buy cotton quilting fabric.

Not wanting to get too technical here, I’ll thin you all of the details, but suffice it to say that even with 100% cotton fabric, there is variety.

First there is the plait.

Poplin, chino, chenille and velveteen can all be 100% cotton. These fabrics are mainly heavier than traditional quilting fabric, and may have a particular texture in their clinch – like the fuzzy velveteen. They would be fine occupied in large pieces, but you wouldn’t want to try to make ½” strips from any of these fabrics.

Adroit Quilting Fabrics

Broadcloth or plain-weave cotton – this mechanism weight fabric can be sewn easily, without slipping and sliding, and allowing silky (and not bulky) seam allowances.

Homespun – this organization is woven with already-dyed threads. Generally these fabrics are solids, plaids, stripes, or checks.

Mislead quilting fabric is woven using a bulkier cotton thread, and can seem tender-hearted of fuzzy. (Nice quilting fabric for a baby or a cold winter darkness.)

Chintz – this fabric has a high thread be sure of and a glazed finish. Although it adds some interest to your quilt, the thread reckon on presents some challenges to hand quilting, it may pucker as you sew, and pins and needles may cause persistent holes – not too attractive in a finished quilt.

York Trip

We started out with terrific plans for a family weekend in York, a visit to the Quilt museum for the girls and the Air museum for the boys. However my DH managed to get an abscess on his tooth, then he was allergic to the antibiotics and honourable generally feeling awful, the whole trip was abandoned. Well not entirely...

When the boys went back to work on Monday, my DD and myself set out for the early procession for a day trip to York. It was a lovely bright morning and walking in from the garrison we were greeted with this lovely view of the sun shining on the boats and the river Ouse.

The Quilt museum and gallery are shut down on a Monday so there was nothing else for it but to shop til we dropped!!! We will have to go back again when the Quilt Museum is problematic (and the bank account has recovered). We found a lovely wool shop in The Muddle which had Rowan cotton yarn reduced to £2.40 a ball, so I purchased enough to compact a cup cake. With a pattern from Julie at Little Cotton Rabbits, I started knitting last twilight.
