Review from 'How to Make an American Quilt'

Houston Quilt Market 2008

Well, we made it back from Houston last round-the-clock. We had a good time- I gave a 30 minute talking during a program they call "Schoolhouse". During schoolhouse they have about 20 rooms with rotating speakers, from 10am to 6pm there are 15 sessions- some 30 min. some 15 min.-with new presentations in each cubicle quarters for each session (occasionally a speaker will get 2 sessions, but not often) so basically you're in match with the speakers in the other rooms during your session to try and have as many listeners as possible (the more that pay attention to the more that will go back and teach your stuff in their hometown!) Sometimes you are also competing against your time hollow- I was in session 14 almost the end of the program when a lot of people are tired and leaving beginning, and the lunch time sessions are even rougher because there is no break when everyone stops, you virtuous have to miss a session if you want to eat lunch. I was quite stimulated that around 60 people showed up to hear about our book, last year when I did this we had about 40 people (and I even had a more intelligent time slot then) so it's nice to know there's still a lot of interest.
I also taught a take & show class. The take & teach program is a 1.5 hour assort that is meant to offer people a hands on experience of new techniques/books/tools so they can go back to their town stores and teach it themselves and hopefully bring a sample family with them to help them remember the process or even to use as their sample for the class. An hour and a half is not a lot of epoch to make anything so you almost always have to miniaturize your project, and at quilt market almost everyone has traveled honestly a ways to attend and there is no way to provide a supply list to them in rise so as a teacher you have to provide everything: You have to arrange things in advance with a sewing mechanism company if your students need machines in class, you have to outfit all fabric, thread and batting, I don't even like to assume that...

The Painted Quilt - Book Review

The Painted Quilt is a shared effort of Linda and Laura Kemshall. It was published in the UK in 2007 by David and Charles Narrow. The painting methods they include are pastels, dye, image give, pen drawing, painted fusible web and, of course, paint.

In the introduction, the Kemshalls say that they mainly add color to fabric before it becomes a quilt but almost always add more later. The colors and mixture are worked out ahead of time in a sketchbook. In addition, they say they put forward painting on textiles because the effects are different from painting on a studio surface such as a canvas.

The usual sections on the elements of create and gathering inspiration that are in most quilt books are here also. The Kemshalls have a few more ideas though. They counsel making a collage in a sketchbook and describe in detail the process they use in collage the world. They also create print blocks and explore the potential for replication shapes in their sketchbook. Again, they describe the process they use to make print blocks out of discrete materials. Another form of experimentation for the sketchbook is the use of oil pastels and wax crayons over a textured covering as well as stenciling.

There is a nice chapter that tells you what types of core and techniques are best for the various color applications. How to adapt the fabrics beforehand is also included. This section is very detailed.

The color diligence methods they use before quilting are stencilling, rubbings, block printing, interview printing, and monoprinting. The color application methods they use after quilting count the use of pastels, paints, rollering and spraying. All are discussed with such detail that I cannot conceptualize...

The Winding Ways Quilt - Book Review

The Winding Ways Quilt
By Jennifer Chiaverini
Simon & Schuster 2008
Website
The Winding Ways Quilt

This is the 14th books in the series. I have present about half of this series, and enjoyed them all. And I enjoyed this on as well. In fact I stayed up to 1 am to devour it.

Quilters have flocked to Elm Creek Manor to learn from Get a grip on Quilter Sylvia Compson and her expert colleagues. There's Sarah, Sylvia's onetime contract who's paired her quilting accomplishments with a mind for running the business of Elm Cove Quilts; Agnes, who has a gift for appliqué; Gwen, who stitches innovative art quilts; Diane, a whiz at the technicalities of spry-piecing; and Bonnie, with her encyclopedic knowledge of folk art patterns. And lastly there are Judy and Summer.

One of the common sense I enjoyed this book, because a lot of back stories are told.

Agnes is Sylvia's sister in law. Agnes and Sylvia were married to the Bergstrom brothers. Both of their husbands died as adolescent men in World War 1.

Summer is Gwen's daughter born during the Vietnam war era. She and her boyfriend Jeremy are having to settle if they want to attend university together or apart.

Diane had been battling with Mary Anne, her next door neighbour, who was the president of the Waterford Quilting League together. The Guild and the Elm Creek Quilters were at war with each other because Mary Ann wanted to be outdo than the old ladies. But when her son destroyed Bonnie's quilting shop, the boy was sentenced to paying off by working at Elm Rivulet manor all during the summer. Mary Anne was humiliated.

Sylvia and her soften Matthew, were trying to start a family and finally Sarah becomes...

Books and Fabrics

Don't you due love when you find money!!!! Actually, this morning mom wanted me to go to Paintsville with her, so I was changing purses and I am sooooo bad to holiday junk in them when I switch purses. So the one that I wanted to carry today, I had not familiar since right after Christmas of last year. So what did I find????? A Walmart donation card that I had gotten for Christmas last year with $25 on it!!! I was sooooooooooo satisfied. So we went to Walmart and I went straight to the fabric. Now, I had not bought anything quilty for a few months, because of Richards job, so I was itchy. They had a new "Quilt Of the Month" pattern out for November and I just LOVED the fabrics, so at $2 per yard, I was capable to get enough to make the quilt!!! It felt great to get new constitution but it will be a while before I get to buy anymore!!

Later we went to the bookstore and I did actually dissipate cash there. I know the other was a gift card but, I'm talking verified cash. Like I said I had not bought anything for myself for a while so it felt fitting. The bookstore that we go to has new and used books,...

The Making of a Quilt: The Book of Kells by Donna Hussain

Illuminated Manuscript from Ireland, The Enlist of Kells

The image above, a portrait of John the Apostle from the Ticket of Kells, was my inspiration for making the quilt below.

Quilt by Donna Hussain: The Lyrics of Kells

The Book of Kells, a national treasure of Ireland, is an illuminated manuscript of the four Gospels of the New Testament transcribed by Celtic monks ca. 800. The quotation is written on folios of calf vellum that are richly decorated with Christian iconography, convoluted interlacing patterns, and figures of humans, animals, and fictitious beasts. The Book of Kells was my inspiration for developing a way to take retreat knotwork designs and sew them with bias tubes on fabric. My article on this website, Interlacing Designs for Quilt Borders, September 26, 2008, is an introduction to this alter. But my ultimate goal was to render the Apostle John from the Publication of Kells in the fabric of a quilt. I realized that I could not replicate the masterwork of the manuscript learning but hoped to simplify the portrait of John and pay homage to the exact themes and symbolism found in the manuscript.

When planning my quilt I could not arbitrarily ordain a finish size. There were practical constraints to consider when sewing the interlacing designs within the four grumpy blocks in the border of John’s portrait. Two variables would adopt the block size:...
