Art Painting and Decoration, Majolica, faience or delft?

These are the names occupied for stylistically distinct types of European pottery that are all covered in an equivocal glaze made white by ashes of tin.

Right colours are misplaced if they are painted onto earthenware with a clear lead glaze — the earliest pattern widely used—since the glaze deepens the underlying clay distort. However, a primary coat of white or cream tin glaze creates a undefiled surface on which other colours stand out brilliantly. The various names for tin-glazed wares from varied countries reflect the historical sequence in which the technique passed from one to another. It quite originated in the Middle East some £100 years ago. The Moors in Spain introduced it to Europe and, in the 13th century, started producing what we now call Hispano-Moresque wares. In Italy, tin- glazed delftware was known as ‘maiolica’ (after the island of Majorca, from which HispanoMoresque wares were exported). The French, German and Scandinavian versions are called ‘faience’ or `fayence’ (after the Italian earthenware centre of Faenza), the Dutch ‘Delft’ (a dominant Dutch centre), and the English ‘delftware’ (derived from the Dutch name).

Questions of Singularity

Tin-glazed earthenware can be spotted by the way its brittle glaze tends to flake or splinter on edges and corners. Unlike a porcelain congress, the clay beneath is grainy and quite different in appearance from the glaze. Few tin-glazed earthenwares more than 100 years old are unchipped, so this is undemanding to check. While you may confuse Dutch decoration with Chinese or Japanese, checking the true to life material will soon tell you which is which. The decoration, form and conversation piece of tin- glazed earthenware vary greatly. HispanoMoresque chargers made for Florentine nobles in the 15th century may furnish at auction for well into five figures. A mid- 18th-century English delftware gloomy and white plate may fetch £30-£100. Fine Italian maiolica from Urbino with Serious decoration sells for between £5000 and £50,000, even if it has been broken and stuck or riveted together. In the mid-point and late 18th century, competition from Chinese imports and new porcelain products gravely damaged the market for north European tin-glazes. But in Mediterranean countries the praxis continues today. For £10-£100 you can buy a souvenir that is unlikely ever to have accumulator’s value. For £5000-£20,000 you can acquire a dish or jug by Picasso, as adept as the best of his paintings.

snowy day

Today is snowed and snowed. Without thought the inclement weather (all the pretty fall leaves are now frostbitten!) I emptied the afternoon painting a field of wildflowers amongst other things (painting update very on the double!). Snow in October!

Anyway, I picked up an antique dresser set yesterday for a number cheaply! It’s beautiful and inspiring (I think its from the 30’s but not dependable) and it came in an old tattered yellow box with the original fluffy pink cotton to keep it true. I was thinking about pretty dressing tables and my mother’s stood out as the A-one I’ve seen. She is such a lovely decorator. Her vanity: (and me demanding to move out of the way of the camera!)

Now I’m on the hunt for a vanity to display all my mouth-watering vintage things. I am imaging something 20’s, 30’s or 40’s.

I have been collecting antique exact replica frames for my paintings. Managed to stockpile a bunch. They modify some neat repros but I really want to stick to antique frames, from victorian to the 40’s. It’s a legitimate treasure hunt and I feel that I’m recycling while pronouncement unique frames. I have to admit I have some 60’s frames that are extremely neat though (I think they are the 60’s version of the victorian repro). In the one-time couple of weeks I found some Victorian frames all under 10 dollars but the superimpose filagree adornments (covered in gold) were broken off in sections. Does anyone distinguish if there is a remedy for this? It was sad to leave them at the store but I felt that fixing them was a beyond repair cause.

Currently I am absolutely coveting frames such as these for my paintings: (guilt-ridden I can’t remember where I found them but it was an antique shop and the first and last one was around $100)

Try to ignore the images in the last two. I’d pop them out and put scarcely intricate...
