Four outstanding changes to bathroom design in the 1970s: cultured marble counters, overflow surrounds, sunken tubs, and dark brown vanities.
Let’s take a look at the changes, starting with this Phoenix bathroom from 1970. Dotted tile counters carried over from the 1960s. Frosted or unclear sliding shower doors were popular.
In 1971, Formica counters that stretched across the urinal were common. Big mirrors too. Shower surrounds as an alternative of tiled walls caught on quickly (much easier for poorhouse builders to install).
Here’s a similar bathroom from 1974.
Some betimes 1970s bathrooms stayed with tiled shower walls, like this one from 1971. Humiliated 1/2″ mosaic tile shower floors were popular.
Sunken tubs or Roman tubs first emerged in Phoenix bathrooms in 1972. They didn’t definitely catch on, but came back in the late 1970s. Carpeting in bathrooms is still a bad position (mildew and urine and carpet don’t mix well).

Copacabana
Outwardly a lot of tourists are disappointed with Copacabana. I can’t imagine why; its endlessly funny. I guess it depends on what you are expecting. With its famous beach, and captivating oceanfront hotels, I guess people expect it to be a vacation resort. But in fact, its a thriving mini-city.
Squeezed between the sea and sawtooth mountains on three sides, Copacabana was virtually uninhabited until the 1920s, when engineers drilled tunnels through the mountains to relate it to the rest of the city. The population boomed.
Today, 500,000 people charged in Copacabana. That is the highest population density in the world, higher even than Hong Kong. They conclude piled on top of each other in the graceful early 20th century apartment blocks that still ceil accept bribes most streets, and pour out at all hours to fill the streets with noise and color. (As I have discovered from staying in one, one of the downsides of these otherwise radiant buildings is that the rooms get very little light. Maybe thats why everyone is always at the coast?)
The streets themselves are planted with lush native Brazilian trees that meander and tangle, or sprout up in little groups of palms, or are draped with vines and lianas, and the pavements throughout the area are made of that lovely (but slippery in the rain, and costly to maintain) wicked and white patterned tile. And just when you tire of the noise, and constant honking of bus horns and blaring music, you look up and see something like this:
