Free Advice - Painting Supplies

Tips for Beginners Oil Painting - Supplies

Of by all means, before you can start a painting you have to have a number of art supplies. Here, we will list the most essential tools you exigency to create an oil painting, that is, at least the way I create such a painting. Here we go.

Brushes - Again, there are hundreds of kinds of brushes and many varied brands. But to start, you really only need a few filbert brushes of actually good quality.

1. One large no. 10 or 12

2. One or two no. 8’s

3. One or two no. 6’s

4. One feel discomfited no. 2

The reason I suggest filbert brushes is that they more or less combine the capabilities of a circuitous route and a flat brush. Also, the main reason we need two brushes of the same mass is that we can then use two colors at the same time. That means, less brush rinsing.

Canvas - A gathering of canvases. At this time I suggest you buy pre-stretched canvases so you can start to colouring immediately. Good standard starting sizes are 16″ x 12″ or 18″x24″. You can also use canvas panels which might sometimes be cheaper depending on where you buy them.

Easel - You necessary an easel to put your canvas on. Try to buy a sturdy easel. In fact, you could even make your own easel out of wood if you are a bit nearby.

Palette - I prefer to a paper palette of at least 16″x20″. I absolutely use an 18″x24″ which gives me even more room (that is, of course, when I carouse at home). These palette sheets come in pads of 50 sheets and are not very costly. You use them to mix your paints on.

Paints - Yes, you do need paints! Try to buy tubes containing at least 37 ml of make-up. Some brands have tubes of 200 ml and for certain colors (such as Caucasoid) they may even offer larger containers. The totality of tube colors you use is also called a palette. As a starting palette I indicate the following colors.

1. Lemon Yellow

2. Cadmium Yellow

3. Cadmium Red

Always in Style, Part 4

Always in Stylishness
16″ x 20″ on Raphael Linen Panel

This is the fourth installment on this depiction project.

September 20, 2008

When I set to work today, my intention was to oil the details and move the painting to the drying room for a week or two before color line began. A good plan, and the next obvious step in the organize.

But when I went back to the easel, I decided to replace the halter. The portrait ethical didn’t look right without it.

So I began erection a halter around Style’s head, using the outstanding reference, which shows her wearing one of those utilitarian nylon halters, and another photo of another horse wearing a satisfactory, leather halter as resources.

As usually happens, I made corrections and adjustments on the areas around the halter as I worked each sketch of leather or hardware. By the end of the evening, I had not only repainted all of the halter, but most of Trend, as well. I also found some areas that had been only lightly blocked in or hadn’t been worked on at all and worked on those.

To despatch for the day, I darkened some of the shadows, reworked the background around Style and reworked her mane and forelock, as well.

September 22, 2008

It didn’t take much to exterminate the under painting today. Basically, a few highlights dry brushed onto the halter as needed and it was finished. Everything else looked well-disposed, so I photographed the painting, then moved it off the easel and to the drying room.

It will remain there for a week. At the end of that stretch, I will take a look at it to see if it’s dry. If not, I will wait another week. It generally takes two weeks for an under painting to dry altogether and I much prefer to give paintings the full two weeks because it ends up taking longer to fix problems that may catch with impatience than it takes to wait for two weeks.

Paint is flying around here as I get ready for my First Friday show in Anchorage. Please ration the above flyer with anyone who you think might be interested. Since homeschooling is taking up more of my habits these days, this will be my last solo exhibit for a little while (I will continue to coat, but at a more leisurely pace). My new Tali’s Pocket Prints are beloved and affordable. They will make wonderful Christmas presents. My new “When We were Pubescent” original painting series is well under way, and you’ll have the opportunity of seeing (and purchasing, is you are so keen) the first fruits of this new endeavor. Some of my larger works that you’ve seen before will also be on exposition as well as signed prints. If you haven’t attended the First Friday exhibits in Anchorage, this is a high-minded opportunity to view some wonderful original art. I’ll be there to atone for questions and might even attempt a “live” painting. If you can’t heed, the paintings will be up for most of the month. As always, feel free to contact me if there a noteworthy subject you’d like to see painted, would like to pre-body prints, have questions, or just want to say hi. Hope to see you there!
