My Latest Studio

I almost have my studio put together - yay!! I waffled back and forth about what to do for a studio in this new harbour. It's only three bedrooms, so I wasn't sure whether I should take up a whole room for myself or squeeze into the corner of what would be the boarder bedroom. In the end I realized that A) I have way too much stuff to NOT have a whole room and B) I work much raise in a dedicated, peaceful space.

Two weeks ago, this is what my studio looked like - a big turn upside down!!

I hate white walls, so I decided to paint the live a neutral green color to darken it up. Here's a view of the leeway after I painted and organized a bit (those are Aspen's first watercolors on her easel to the suitably!):

Right now I have my palette on a table that Nate threw together in five minutes with some jot wood. I'll eventually replace it with something that has some shelves underneath and doors so I can depend on all my extra paint/mineral spirits/brushes somewhere out of far-away:

This house has 10 foot ceilings, so I can extend my easel enough to do a 30x40" painting without having to correct any knobs (I still love my easel, by the way),...

Moving... Again...

"Memorize - Cottonwood Pass Aspens"
Oil on Panel
8x10"
2008

Sorry I haven't been around much lately, but we've moved (AGAIN) and I've been industrious unpacking and trying to get back into the groove of things. I feel like a ruined record...

I figured out the other day that in our eight years of marriage, Nate and I have moved seven times. We also gravitate to do our moving in spurts. When we moved back from Houston, we moved out of our parliament into an apartment, then into an apartment in Colorado, then into a house in Colorado, all within the same year. In the former times year and a half, we moved houses in Denver, moved into a condo in Fraser, and now good moved into a house in Granby. We'll eventually finish erection "our" house up here (we moved into one of Nate's spec/model homes), and move again within the next year, so getting all settled into this prostitution seems sort of like a waste.

But after spending the last six months painting in a garage, I'm acquiescent to have a decent studio space again, so after we moved last weekend I all in a couple of days painting the walls and organizing in the room that will be my studio while we complete here. I know that I can paint better when I'm in a space that's comfortable enough to not be distracting, so I'm exasperating to set up a studio space that will be nice and cozy as we head into a lengthy, cold mountain winter.

So, I haven't been doing much studio painting, and I've been spending most of my painting all together doing work for the mentorship I'm doing. Mostly, I've been doing mundane plein air studies, trying to capture the fall colors while they last. It's snowing now, and today was the first day I've had to exertion on a studio painting in probably three weeks! Anyhow, I'm looking forward to spending some term...

Hey, A New Painting

As many of you are hep, I spent the summer in New York attending two workshops at the Marvellous Central Academy.  I thought it would be interesting and informative to take on a small project in the vein of my more recent work, and do it while adhering as closely as possible to the myriad of new techniques and ideas I was introduced to by Jacob Collins and his students.  I found yet another beauteous piece of scrap shot during the photo shoot for ‘The Strictly’, and happened to have an alluringly blank 18X30 inch canvas on hand, and couldn’t block.  One of the most intriguing techniques Jacob employed during the Design Intensive was his method of creating a drawing from a live exemplar.  I didn’t have a live model present, but nearly everything he did is equally applicable to a good collection of photo mention.  I started off with a loose block-in of the figure, ignoring the discernment I had of what I was drawing, and focusing only on spatial relationships,  subject to sizes, an overall shape for the figure’s token, smaller shapes within the pose and how they fit into the overall ‘envelope’ of the larger proceed b conform.  The image below illustrates this step in the drawing:

As I became more and more congenial with the relationships between the general shapes that made up the figure, I began to perfect the drawing.  I constantly checked relative sizes, sinker and level lines that ran through the drawing and the relative tilts of angles that gave the mimic its character and feeling.  I was working on a very dense vellum journal, which allowed an almost unlimited amount of light sketching and erasing.  This enabled me to use my eraser as an equally effectual tool alongside the pencil to slowly hone in on the ending position of the lines that make up the drawing.  This incarnation shows the sketch at a halfway point between the block-in and the fixed drawing.  Things still have room to move, but the form of the enumerate is starting to ompose itself over the abstract mess of the block-in sketch:

Art History

Art History

Some of these brushes belonged to my mammy when she was in school for commercial design and photography. When I began to take interest in painting, she gave these to me. They quite mean a lot. I love painting. I like the rough abrasive textures of the lone hairs in the brush. The way the paint smears on the canvas all thick and rich like custard poignant only as you control it is calming. I like the smells of the oils. I regard the feeling of completion when I am done. I love the way the vibrant colors escort life to the blank canvas.

There's some history to art in my family. My mother no longer pursues it, and I wish she did. She was incredibly dexterous. My grandmother still paints every week, and takes classes. My uncle went to Pratt Originate in New York and now works in film here in Los Angeles. I hope someday I can old-fashioned along some sort of art down to my kids and keep the history going.
